normal_04188.jpg Barbados will lay out the red carpet for its Grammy award singer, Rihanna, who is due home on Thursday, one day after her 20th birthday.

Rihanna will be met on arrival at the Grantley Adams International Airport by a delegation that includes Prime Minister David Thompson, members of his Cabinet as well as the principals of the Charles F Broome and Combermere Schools, which she attended.

There will also be a cultural performance at the airport featuring schools and cultural groups.

 

The singer, who won a Grammy for her tune “Umbrella”, will be the guest of honour at a free concert at Independence Square in the heart of the capital to titled “Believe – a Tribute to Rihanna” and featuring a host of local artistes including Shontelle, Edwin, Livvi Frank, Lil’ Rick, Arturo Tappin, Kid Site and calypso monarch Red Plastic Bag.

 

The promoters said that the audience will also have an opportunity to learn more about the “Believe” Foundation, a public charity organization created by Rihanna dedicated to assisting terminally ill children worldwide.

 

Its mission is to assist and inspire children who suffer from life-threatening diseases including cancer, leukaemia and HIV/AIDS.

 

Another honouree at the concert will be Barbadian musician Jimmy Haynes, who produced the 1986 Steel Pulse classic Babylon “The Bandit”, which garnered the group a best reggae album Grammy award.

 

The tribute will be performed by Nicholas Brancker and his orchestra, with vocals by guest artist, Biggie Irie.

 

Prime Minister Thompson is also expected to address the concert.
