NEW YORK, NY (RHONA FOX, INC.) – Reggae star Richie Spice heads into 2009 with three big nominations to his name, including Male Vocalist of the Year, Culture/Positive Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year, for his blockbuster hit, “The Plane Land.”
Spice’s nominations are part of Jamaica’s Excellence in Music & Entertainment Awards (EME’s), founded by famed Jamaican radio personality Richie B, and will take place at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston on February 5. For the first time, fans can help choose the winner by logging on to www.emewards.com and voting, through January 31.
Spice scored a hit with “The Plane Land,” off his current album Gideon Boot (VP, May 2008), and has been touring ever since, recently in New York on January 26 to perform at the legendary live-music venue, SOB’s. Backed by the New Kingston Band, Spice rocked the crowd with classics that have made him a household name in crossover markets, including “Youths Dem Cold,” “Earth Ah Run Red,” and the romantic “Brown Skin.” He also unveiled his new hit, “Street Life,” which is produced on the Chemistry Riddim, an EME-nominee for “Riddim of the Year.” The single was well received by the diverse audience in SOB’s, and Spice is looking forward to the track crossing over into mainstream airplay and into the ear buds of his international fans.
Spice now prepares for a European tour this spring, and is currently working on a number of new tracks, including a production from hip-hop heavyweight producer Diplo, who is credited for bringing UK star M.I.A. to the masses. Plans for the video for “Street Life” are also underway, and it is scheduled to go into production in February.
